Cavedon wines are a limited selection of cool climate, single-vineyard wines from a third generation vineyard in the King Valley. Gabe O’Brien started handcrafting small batches of wine, after he and his wife Pia took over the vineyard from his father-in-law and second generation vigneron, Dino Cavedon. The wines are a pure expression of their vineyard, with a focus on experimenting with the otherwise traditional varieties and methods of the region.

OVER 40 YEARS OF GRAPE GROWING

Dino Cavedon has grown grapes in The King Valley for over 40 years. He, his brother and their parents, were one of the first families to plant vines here back in '77. In the early years, Dino partnered with the Department of Agriculture, to facilitate the innovation of quality grape growing in the region. As a stickler for healthy vines and balanced grapes, he’s helped innovate some of the local viticultural methods used today, particularly in trellising. And has been meticulous in every decision since. 

FAMILY OWNED AND OPERATED

Cavedon Wines all began when Dino started making plans to slow down. But he had no succession plan.So when Dino said he was soon wanting to hang up the boots, we moved back. We couldn't watch these abundant vines- 44 years of hard work- turn to nothing.  So we learnt the art and science of growing quality cool climate fruit in the Valley. 

CLOSING THE LOOP

But, as grape growers, we were a little unfulfilled in dedicating an entire

year caring for every vine, only to watch the fruits of our labour leave at the end of vintage. But now there was the three of us, and we had the

extra hands to close the loop. So we did, and finally decided to keep small amounts of fruit (the pick of the bunch) for ourselves.

As we keep moving forward today, we're still breaking away from the mould, just like Dino did over 40 years ago. We're experimenting with new varietals for the region and finding different way of expressing them.

SINGLE VINEYARD, SMALL-BATCH, MINIMAL INTERVENTION

We began turning small batches of fruit into single-vineyard, minimal intevention wines with personality. Making wine to champion our fruit and the nuances of our site.
